Fish-friendly turbine

The fish-friendly low pressure water turbine of Pentair Fairbanks Nijhuis / FishFlow Innovations has been tested successfully on its fish-friendliness early August. For the performance of the test a scale model of the turbine (with a propeller diameter of 800 mm) was used and installed at the pumping station Leeghwater Buitenkaag* in the Netherlands. With the application of fish-friendly turbines hydroelectric energy generation will become possible in a fish-friendly manner.

The performance of the practical test with live fish** was executed by the independent institute IMARES Wageningen UR. Their report of the turbine test showed a fish-friendliness of 100 percent for eel, still after the assessment of the deferred mortality after 96 hours. Even eel with a length of approx. 85 cm passed the turbine unscathed. In a subsequent test later this year the fish-friendliness for other fish will be determined.

Pentair Fairbanks Nijhuis / FishFlow Innovations can design and manufacture this patented fish-friendly turbine custom made for most common low pressure operating situations. The tested scale model turbine is designed for a capacity of 3 m3/s and a differential head of two meters, that can generate 100 kW of energy. It is a 1:5 scaling of a future planned turbine, that will generate approximately 3600 kW and has a capacity of 100 m3/s with a propeller diameter of 4000 mm.

Part of the fish-friendly alterations to the turbine is the unique shape of the propeller vane. This creates a favorable flow in the water that allows the fish to migrate safely through the turbine. In addition, the space between the propeller vanes is much wider, which substantially reduces the impact risk. Earlier efficiency tests at the test rig of Pentair Fairbanks Nijhuis showed that the efficiency of the fish-friendly turbine is not affected compared to a conventional turbine. The applied fish-friendly principles are based on the previously developed and patented fish-friendly pump from Pentair Fairbanks Nijhuis /  FishFlow Innovations, which has successfully been installed in several pumping stations.

The fish-friendly turbine offers a solution to a global ecological problem of fish mortality caused by migration through turbines of hydro-electric power stations.

As a result of this fish mortality many turbines are out of operation and this implies insufficient use of energy production by hydropower creating a situation that blocks both as environmental importance as well as an economical importance for fisheries and the sustainable production of energy. This makes the fish-friendly turbine an extremely sustainable innovation.

The test was attended by the officials of IMARES, along with representatives of Hoogheemraadschap Rijnland(District Water Control Board  Rijnland, The Netherlands), Rijkswaterstaat (executive arm of the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment), ATKB (test institute) en Sportvisserij Nederland (Sport Fishing Netherlands).
